Everybody desires freedom of speech. On the internet, anyone can say anything they wish without worrying much about consequences. However, this freedom is not absolute. If what the writer says offends too many people, police may still take action on the writer. absolute freedom does not exist, even in the virtual world. This ensures that society remains harmonious as absolute freedom would bring harm to the society, especially in a multicultural, multiracial community such as in Malaysia.
If writers or bloggers are free to write anything they please, they will offend many people and this can cause social unrest. Also, each race would be free to criticize other races as they wish. They would be able to patronize other races and religions claiming themselves to be the best race or religion. This could lead to fights among races, racial killings and in an extreme context, the repetition of the 13th May 1969incident.
Also, dissidents would be allowed to write anything they wish on the government. They can criticize parliament and its ruling, question existing laws and say bad things about the authorities, and also promote rebellion. Seeing as how today's generation believe what they read online more than what they read in the mainstream news, their rebellious spirits will be ignited and they will be influenced to rebel against the government and their ruling. This could cause riots, strikes and overall chaos in the streets.
Other than that, absolute freedom in online media can also increase sex crimes. This is because people would be able to post anything including pictures and others who see it might get aroused and being unable to release their desires, they will proceed to go out and look for victims whom they can use to release these wants.
Besides that, if a person is granted absolute freedom in new media, they would be able to promote false religion. Even without wide promotion false religions are chosen as a faith by many, imagine what would happen if these false religions were promoted through the virtual world. More people would choose these false religions as their faith. This reduces the integrity of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism as the main religions in this country. This could lead to natural disasters as a punishment for the sins of the wrongdoers as has been happening in many countries.
It can also cause wars if a person writes about another country freely. If the person criticizes the ruling of another country, criticizes its leaders and says bad things about the people of the country, especially if untrue, this would cause the people of that country to be upset and start a war with the country of the writer. It could also affect economical ties between the two countries and cause the decline of economy in the writer's country.
Freedom of speech is a good thing and should be encouraged. However, absolute freedom is not an option if social harmony is to be maintained. Even freedom of speech must be controlled to maintain peace not only locally but also globally.
