I Love Tanjung Balai Part 2

Sorry for the long hiatus, but I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to write. So, for my loyal reader(s?), here's Part 2! The night after the wedding, dearest husband took me around town, and we went to sit by a pier. When he said we were going to sit by a pier I was wondering what we could do there, but it turns out it was quite a happening place. It was a long pier, with stalls along the whole pier selling drinks and snacks. There was this drink called Pop Shake which I had seen so many times but never had a chance to try, so I wanted to try it there, and of course my luck being the way it is, their generator broke right after I ordered, so I still don't know how Pop Shake tastes like. Boo.

Here's hubby proudly posing on the bike we borrowed.
We sat there by the pier watching the boats and ships go by until almost sunset. It was fun to see all the fishermen come back with their fish for the day. There was even a long boat full of only kids who looked like they were between 12-16 years old.
The next morning, we went to the market to eat "kolak dingin" and drink avocado, and after that we went around just looking at the things for sale. It was sort of like Uptown but way bigger. My favourite was the kolak dingin, which is basically something like pengat pisang, but with tapai ubi, sumsum and pulut in it, with shaved ice on top and topped with condensed milk and gula melaka. Awesome.
We also bought some avocadoes and my sister-in-law made avocado juice. I bought some to bring home but couldn't reproduce it. Maybe next time.
The rest of the day was spent at father-in-law's house, as we had lunch there with the family and since it takes so long to get there we couldn't just eat and leave. It was sort of like a post wedding lunch thing but I can't remember what it's called. The rest of the day was mostly uneventful. We talked, we laughed, we took photos. A relative of husband's who wasn't invited to the wedding came by to tell everyone that she was very upset. Apparently it was a relative nobody liked. When she arrived everyone disappeared. I was left alone and defenseless with only hubby and his brother who didn't make it out in time. After she left, everyone came back and patted me on the back. Haha.
That night, hubby bought a bag of kerang (cockles?) and they roasted them over an open fire. Never have I eaten so much kerang in my life, and such big ones too. I ate so much I got food poisoning and I still can't look at kerang without gagging. Still, it was so good.
The following day, it was time to go. I was kind of sad, since I had really enjoyed my time there. His relatives for some reason were convinced I wouldn't come back because they lived in a "kampung". Even though I told them I loved it there, they weren't convinced. Before we left, hubby went to buy some prawns for his sister-in-law to cook for us to take home. Meanwhile, I ate pari bakar which the sister-in-law cooked. It was simply cooked with lime and salt but so good. The rice there is also so much better than the rice I'm used to so I ate three to four times more rice than I usually do here (not an exaggeration).
Then, we were sent to the port to wait for our ferry. Goodbye Tanjung Balai, see you this Raya.
